Returning To One Moment In Time

November 8, 2010

If you could return to one moment in time, what would it be?  You don’t get to alter history, merely observe and repeat it.

I’m sure the answer may be easier or harder for many of us to answer, depending on dramatic events in our life.  Take the wife who lost a husband on 9-11.  I’m sure she’d instantly say “I’d like to return to the evening of September 10th.”  For me, while I have lost loved ones, I wouldn’t enjoy or wish returning to the days before their death.  Instead, I’d like to return to something epic; something that would shake the very foundation of my faith and belief in life.

I’m going to cheat and say I’d like to return to two moments in history: 1) the crucifixion and the days before and after it; and 2) Roswell New Mexico during the supposed alien craft crash.

Why these two events?  Well, I’m a devout Christian (though many wouldn’t know it) and I’d like to know whether what I believe in is real or fiction.  Knowing one way or another would either intensify my faith, or convert me into a Jew!

As for Roswell, if an alien craft really did crash, it would prove once and for all that we are not alone in the universe.  Could you imagine the reality?

How about you?  What moment would you return to?

Rare Color Photos From The Depression

August 9, 2010

I thought this was pretty cool so decided to share.  Click the link below to see rare color photos from the Great Depression era.  My buddy and I were joking around a few days ago that when my wife and I have kids we should tell them that the world use to be colorless; that’s why all the old photos are in black and white (I know black and white are colors, you’re missing the point!).  I’ll have to hide this post from them!

Check out the photos here

A Tuesday Turned Saturday

July 20, 2010

I’m just sitting here watching a Giants game (baseball) so I figured I’d drop a line.  I woke up three separate times last night with very bad asthma problems.  For those of you who do not know, I’ve had chronic asthma since I was 3, which has placed me in the E.R. on average of a twice a year for the extent of my life.  It’s not all that bad to me (well, I’m pretty used to it) but it scares the hell out of my wife.

I woke up this morning exhausted, and I was still having difficulty breathing.  I tried to do some morning errands but the lips were going purple so my wife decided it was about time to hit up a local clinic.  We’re in between insurance at the moment so we had to pay out of pocket.

Long story short, I got the treatment I needed but walked around all day with what felt like a hangover.  If I’m going to get a hangover, can’t I at least have the fun that precedes a hangover?  Apparently not.

I couldn’t get much in the way of work done today, with the breathing problems and hangover and all.  So I finally decided to accept defeat and took the day off.  I really did not want to but I didn’t have much of a choice.

On a side note, one consequence of attending law school and racking up a ton of debt is that no one will extend credit to you.  For example, a few months back my wife and I sought a $3,000 car loan to cover the remaining cost of our car.  We didn’t need the loan, but a cushion for our savings account would have been nice.  We were denied even though both of us were working.  They told us our debt to income was too high.

Then, today, I sought a line of credit for a new laptop .  Same result.  I’ll write a more detailed post on this problem later but it’s very, very frustrating.  We pay our credit cards on time every month, never leaving a balance.  We pay our insurance and rent and loans on time every month.  And yet, we can’t seem to get a loan or a line of credit from anyone, without a 28% interest tag attached.  It’s criminal.

New Header + Other features on the way

January 26, 2010

Hey all!

Figured that as I watch some hockey (Buffalo Sabres battling it out with the Vancouver Canucks) I’d drop everyone a line regarding the future updates for this blog. FYI, typing with a 16 pound cat on your lap = awkward.  Oh, and the cat presently sleeping behind my head who insists on kicking me every few minutes = annoying. By the way, next post will be Part 2 of Road to the Bar.  You can find Part 1 here.

I began this blog in December thinking I’d slowly add content over the coming months, then reveal it to the world in February.  Inadvertently, I forgot to put the blog on private!  Thus, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I noticed visitor hits and comments.

So, I’ve decided to keep the blog public while I finish applying additional content prior to its “official” release.  Here is what I plan to add in the next few days:

  1. Customized Header;
  2. Probably a new blog skin;
  3. Customized gravatar / icon;
  4. Revise the “About Me” page, making the UnLawyered section less personalized and adding a second page that will act a brief personal bio;
  5. Trying out this Meebo widget — its a sort of IM gadget.  Ever the adventurer, I’m going to try it out for a few months and see how I like it;
  6. Update and add links to the links page;
  7. Eventually add a suggested reading section;
  8. Play around with podcasting.

In addition to this list I have lots more to add.  This list is merely a summary of a few things that are to come.  For those of you already visiting my blog, please drop a “hello” so I know who you are!  I will certainly return the favor.  Also, if you have any advice or tips on how to make this blog better, please feel free to contact me.  I don’t mind criticism.  In fact, I welcome it!

2010: It only took a year to get here but . . .

January 1, 2010

It’s about time!  I only have one thing to say about 2009:  Thank God there’s only one!

Time Square New Year Ball

Missy & I spent New Year’s Eve with her parents in Hayward, Ca.  We had a nice dinner, played music, and laid around until midnight (I know, sounds thrilling).

Dad and I did watch a few episodes on the History Channel involving the American Presidents, which was pretty cool [yeah, yeah, "Tim, it's 'History' without the 'Channel,'" . . . whatever dude, 'History' just sounds stupid, kinda like 'SyFy' instead of 'SciFi.'  So, I'm sticking with 'History Channel' because I want to be a part of the solution and not part of the problem].  For those of you who don’t know, I have a huge love affair with anything history related, especially anything relating to Rome, ancient Chinese history, and wars such as WWII, American Revolution, & the American Civil War.  These episodes covered presidents 1 – 8 and highlighted a number of things not normally discussed in the history books.  Cool stuff (I know, “shut up Tim, you’re putting me to sleep.”)

Merry Christmas! Remembering our roots

December 25, 2009

Merry Christmas everyone!

We went to our annual Christmas Eve service at our local Episcopal church last night.  My family has a very long tradition at that church.  My grandparents attended church for some 30 years, my mother was baptized there, my parents met and married there, and I was baptized there.  Its great seeing the old place.  I have plenty of fond memories at that church, such as helping with Halloween parties & assisting my grandfather with fixing the stone wall lining the front of the church (I was only 12 so I’m sure I didn’t do much, but I’d like to think I helped!)

Going there always reminds me that no matter what, remember and visit your roots.  Whatever you may think of them, they’ve made you who you are.  And when you find success, be sure to go back to 1) remind you of where you came from; and 2) thank and donate to those people and institutions that supported you during the hard times.  It keeps you honest and keeps you in touch with reality!

Automotive Manslaughter – culprit still at large

December 24, 2009

My wife & I use to own a Toyota Corolla.  We love Toyota.  In fact, both of our parents own almost exclusively Toyota.  Its unfortunate that Toyota isn’t American made, but my family tried for years to remain loyal and stick with Ford only to suffer unfortunate consequences.  Their Fords always managed to live by their acronym: Found On Road Dead.  At least they were consistent . . . . [Disclaimer:  My sister-in-law owns a Ford Focus and loves it. So I'm not saying all Ford's are lemons, just the ones we've happened to own].

Christmas already?

December 24, 2009

So the past few years my wife and I lived in Oregon and visited California maybe two times a year.  Man, I absolutely hated that drive!  We would wait until finals were final (love using the same word twice but with different connotations in a single sentence!) before we could make the drive.  The problem with that is the mountain pass that separates California and Oregon suffers tremendous blizzards during December and January.  Of course, that never deterred us.  Instead, insanity stepped in and gently pulled us along.  Last year, black ice lined the roads for most of our journey, turning a usual 10 hour trip into a 13 hour trip.  And the year before that, we hit a massive blizzard while traveling through the pass.  Needless to say, the past few holiday drives have been very nerve racking!

Anyways, last year it snowed while we were still in Oregon.  It was a lot of fun! (except for the whole driving a compact car in the snow thing).  We’d never lived anywhere where it snowed.  It definitely made things feel like Christmas.  But this year, things are different.
